A NATO intern was arrested by Belgian police on Friday on suspicion of espionage on behalf of a third country and of membership of a criminal organization.

The intern, a Canadian woman of Chinese origin, worked at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO’s strategic command near Mons, Belgium, where she “has come to the attention” of security services, according to the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

“She is suspected of spying on behalf of a third country and of being a member of a criminal organization,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“At this time, there is no indication that NATO or SHAPE operational readiness, command and control arrangements, or ongoing tasks have been adversely affected,” Martin O’Donnell, SHAPE spokesperson, said in a statement.

On Thursday, Belgian police carried out searches at the suspect’s home and work office, and on Friday, the investigative judge placed her under arrest, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Belgian authorities did not identify the suspect or the third country she was allegedly spying for.

While NATO’s headquarters is located in Brussels, SHAPE, NATO’s strategic command, is near Mons, about 60 kilometres southwest of the Belgian capital.
